CAN ONLINE CLASSES REPLACE TRADITIONAL CLASSES?

Online classes or E learning tools provide students and teachers access to resources they couldn’t have

had otherwise. A philosophy student in Africa can learn from the top professor a continent away, and can do so while balancing their own time while balancing a full time job etc. However, there are more advantages of taking classes in the classroom compared to taking them online, that is, such as being able to physically meet with the teacher, asking for feedback, seeing their reaction and interacting with fellow students etc. Many students learn best through the face to face interaction or the hands on approach that is provided by the teachers and peers while attending classes in the classroom environment. 

The traditional way of taking classes, which is called the classroom environment, has become a lot easier to manage time because you are going to class everyday if not a little less. Students have more time to meet with their peers and teachers and have more time for homework to be done in the classroom with the help of their peers and teachers. Online classes might be effective for some students however many students learn better by seeing, doing and being able to interact with the teacher and their peers. Online classes have made tremendous impact on the instruction and student learning. The social constructivist approach is based on the assumption that individuals learn to construct their knowledge and meanings through interaction with others. 

Thousand of students are earning their degree with little or no traditional participation or no interaction with teachers or their peers. Students who learn by hands on or best through face to face interaction lose all this when they take classes online since they find it easier to understand things by meeting the teachers and peers. Some students also lack the technological skills required to take online classes which causes them to struggle. Taking classes online is a lot cheaper than taking them in the classroom because of the cost of gas to travel to the classes, and other financial expenses like food, drinks, book bags and baby sitter etc. 

Group assignments when conducted in classroom environment are a lot easier because you can physically meet each other and be able to talk and understand the answers given to your queries more clearly. The teacher can see who is putting the effort and who’s not, and give the correct credit to the students who do the work and put in effort. Meeting your teachers and peers face to face helps you improve your assignment before you turn it in. Same goes for taking tests in classroom environment, when giving the test you ask the teacher you have any doubts about questions. In case of tests conducted through online classes, students might use unfair means; cheat. As for myself taking classes in the traditional way allows the students to be honest and understand better, it gives them a chance to improve in their studies and provides them with more feedback from the teacher; better communication with their teachers and peers. Therefore, in this way online classes cannot replace traditional classes even though they might be cheap and provide us with better resources.
